GWA Community Support – Summer 2022

We are delighted to be involved again with various community events which were postponed or cancelled during the pandemic.

We had a speedy GWA team from our Berwick office enter the ‘Curfew Run’ on 6 July. Participants in this fun run are required to complete the 1.28 mile route around Berwick’s Elizabethan town walls before the Curfew Bell stops tolling. The event is organised by Tweed Striders and generously sponsored by Simpsons Malt.  GWA contributed to the entrants’ goodie bags that everyone that took part received.

We also have a GWA team entered in the Berwick Amateur Rowing Club Trade 4s competition which is running again on 27 August. This is a fun community event that provides a taster for anyone interested in rowing as well as raising funds for the club.

GWA is also proud to support the Horncliffe Beer and Music Festival which took place on 9-10 July, a charity golf day on 10 August organised by Berwick Rotary Club in support of the Grove School and the Scottish Endurance Horse Riding Championships at Longnewton from 8-11 September. We have also agreed to sponsor Eyemouth Golf Club for three years and have renewed our support for Duns Golf Club.

The annual agricultural shows across East Lothian, the Borders and Northumberland are the social highpoint of the year for many of our clients and colleagues. It was fantastic to be back at the Haddington Show on 2 July as main sponsor and see so many familiar faces. The weather kept fine and made for a welcome return to the Border Union Show last weekend, and it was lovely to enjoy a chatter with friends again again.  Last but not least, we were pleased to support the Dalkeith Show which took place on 9 July are looking forward to the Alwinton Border Shepherds Show on 8 October.

Abolition of the Furnished Holiday Lettings Regime

The favourable tax regime for Furnished Holiday Lettings (FHLs) was first introduced in 1984. Forty years later, in the Spring 2024 Budget the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt announced its abolition from 6 April 2025.

Employers’ National Insurance Contributions (NICs)

The biggest revenue raiser in the Budget was the changes to NICs. The increase in Employers’ NICs (increasing from 13.8% to 15% from April 2025) grabbed many of the headlines. What has been largely overlooked is the reduction in “Secondary Threshold” from £9,100 to £5,000. Allied to the increase in the National Living Wage, the changes will particularly affect those in the care, retail, hospitality and cleaning/maintenance sectors.

Inheritance Tax

It is difficult to recollect a more seismic Budget in recent times. The last major changes to Inheritance Tax were made in 2006, but mainly in relation to Trusts. There was an expectation that Inheritance Tax reliefs would be reformed, most likely for landlords who lease out land which qualifies for Agricultural Property Relief (APR). It was considered much less likely that Business Property Relief (BPR) would be reformed, and there was a distinct lack of speculation in this regard.

End of Year Tax Planning

Wednesday 5 April 2025 sees the end of the current Tax Year. Following the new Chancellor's plans to continue to freeze
and in some cases reduce tax-free allowances; it is more important than ever to make the most of some timely tax planning.
