Extension to Scottish short-term let licensing scheme

In March 2022 we highlighted legislation being introduced in Scotland requiring hosts and operators of short-term and holiday lets to apply for a licence.  The legislation was aimed at reducing the impact of Airbnb-style lets on local communities and the availability of housing.

Existing hosts of short-term and holiday lets needed to apply for a licence by 1 April 2023 in order to keep operating or face fines of up to £2,500.

In an recent announcement, the Scottish Government has now decided to delay the application deadline for existing operators for six months from 1 April 2023 to 1 October 2023.  They also indicated that there were no plans to change to arrangements for new hosts, who will still be required to obtain a licence before they can accept bookings and receive guests.

The deferral means people who have rented out their property for the festivals will still be able to do so in 2023.

You can read our original article here. We recommend if you operate short-term lets, holiday, Airbnb or similar lets, you should also check the Scottish Government’s licencing guidance.
