When SEISS was first announced, the initial guidance provided was that HMRC would contact you in mid-May and that payments would be made in June. However, on Monday 4 May HMRC updated their guidance, which can be found here on the GOV.UK website.
The major point to note, is that GWA as your agents are not permitted at present to make the application for you. The application needs to be made through your own Government Gateway account.
You can start the process of application now. Firstly, you will need to complete the eligibility checker using this online link. Please have your National Insurance Number and Unique Tax Reference Number to hand as you will need these to start the process.
From here, you will be asked to log into your Government Gateway account. If you don’t have a Government Gateway account do not be alarmed. It is quite common not to have one when your accountants complete your usual tax returns. If you don’t have a Government Gateway account, you should sign up when prompted, as by using this method you should not need to wait for an activation code, which would be the norm.
The SEISS application portal will open on 13 May and you will be invited to apply between 13 May and 18 May. Your payment will be made to you within 6 working days.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW) have provided a helpful crib sheet setting out this process, which we would encourage you to read. This can be accessed on the ICAEW website.
If you would like us to review your payment or if you believe you are eligible but the checker does not allow you to progress, let us know and we will be happy to look into it for you.
If you want to discuss this further or have any concerns, please get in touch with the relevant partner looking after your tax affairs. We are here to help and can be contacted via our usual email address and phone numbers.
